In the Syrian city of Aleppo attacks are indiscriminate. Bombing started in 2012, increasing in 2013 and even more so when Russia entered the conflict in 2015. Aleppo was hit by 4,045 barrel bombs in 2016,
with 225 falling in December alone.

<img width="2456" height="1402" width_o="2456" height_o="1402" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0cfffb7784ed706f4a57db965432a62e415b342b17b8922028e106382571cac2/heatmap_syria.PNG" data-mid="35705834" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0cfffb7784ed706f4a57db965432a62e415b342b17b8922028e106382571cac2/heatmap_syria.PNG" />

The map above illustrates the heatmap of attacks and the intensity of damage to structures. Using satellite imagery of Aleppo from 2010 through to 2016, the United Nations Institute for Training and Rsearch (UNITAR) Operational Satellite Applications Program (UNOSAT) was able to identify 33,521 damaged structures by September 18, 2016.

	There exists a group of volunteer urban resuce workers, known as The White Helmets. They operate in the most dangerous place on earth -
and aid anyone regardless of race or politics.To the right you can see their efforts. &nbsp;

Raed Saleh, head of
the White Helmets says,

“Our unarmed and neutral rescue workers
have saved more than 70,000 people, but there are many we can not reach. There are children trapped in the rubble we can not hear”

This is the moment for design to intervene.

	Much of the debris is far too large for any one person to lift, and in areas where cars and cranes are not viable. Many people are left due to physical limitation.
	<img width="1280" height="720" width_o="1280" height_o="720" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0325c64c107019005c29454b9ac0f9bbfad2e1fe40346376f3921cce5b5b6d9d/carjack2.jpg" data-mid="35706013" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0325c64c107019005c29454b9ac0f9bbfad2e1fe40346376f3921cce5b5b6d9d/carjack2.jpg" />

	Looking at low cost ways to lift debris leads to the discovery of pnumatic

car jacks. These jacks lift sometimes up to 5,000 lbs through compressed

air pressure alone.

Opioid Addiction

I.O.T. and the opioid crisis&nbsp;

Opioid addiction death is becoming an epidemic. In
2016 every day 4,000 people used non-prescription painkillers,
600 being heroin and 1 out of every 6 died. This addiction often starts with a prescreption to pain medicine after an injury.

	<img width="2937" height="1431" width_o="2937" height_o="1431" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/00255a8ebb1a9b61b713df9446a6077ced0fc136cd4575b390ac7c2d163f1538/opioid-news.png" data-mid="35747352" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/00255a8ebb1a9b61b713df9446a6077ced0fc136cd4575b390ac7c2d163f1538/opioid-news.png" />

Addiction often starts with a prescription.

this is what a ideal recovery timeline looks like vs the reality of recovery.&nbsp;

<img width="3465" height="2536" width_o="3465" height_o="2536" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/377eb3d49c78353bf1fc2323f6a9564b9e2a271265a0252ceef0c4e5d9a69bc0/timeline1.png" data-mid="35748200" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/377eb3d49c78353bf1fc2323f6a9564b9e2a271265a0252ceef0c4e5d9a69bc0/timeline1.png" />

.

&nbsp;

	<img width="2848" height="2181" width_o="2848" height_o="2181" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3b94869cee8a71654f9176a4feb5f4673dd1800a17ca25baf9190ccedbfb38fa/timeline2.png" data-mid="35748229" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/3b94869cee8a71654f9176a4feb5f4673dd1800a17ca25baf9190ccedbfb38fa/timeline2.png" />

So the problem is with complience, so how can we design around that?

65-75% of physical therapy patients end up not completing their treatment plan. Patients do not return to scheduled visits, and/or they do not do their exercise at home.&nbsp;
At least half of all opioid overdose deaths involve a prescription.&nbsp;

Intra is a design intervention based on the need of patients to continue their physical therapy and communication with their physcian

<img width="2768" height="2179" width_o="2768" height_o="2179" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/5c023afbaec0a0e46edc8cf7f9de9350846108f6eb0bd3c12b5ba4cdb0ee27a2/intra_phone_w_text.png" data-mid="107762057" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/5c023afbaec0a0e46edc8cf7f9de9350846108f6eb0bd3c12b5ba4cdb0ee27a2/intra_phone_w_text.png" />

We need to design for a better patient / doctor relationship
the mobile interfacing addresses accountability and access. &nbsp;

	<img width="2192" height="815" width_o="2192" height_o="815" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/68c185b7f179607d32bc2dacf14d82bc904b8d94cb4c305981ca0851832f981f/Patient_Longform_w_iphone.png" data-mid="39807956" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/68c185b7f179607d32bc2dacf14d82bc904b8d94cb4c305981ca0851832f981f/Patient_Longform_w_iphone.png" />

The patient registers with their doctor

The doctor registers with their facility&nbsp;Most at home exercises are easily transferable to gaming interfaces. Using gamification, the patient becomes more aware of their exercise and their body. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The patient selects one of the exercises their doctor has prescribed. Their device uses gyroscopes and accelerometers to control the ball along a path.&nbsp;

<img width="1255" height="1029" width_o="1255" height_o="1029" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/539b17aaa6a10221d9c4adae14a5148cf6acf116192e5093f0556913d7816907/begin-workout.png" data-mid="39805419" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/539b17aaa6a10221d9c4adae14a5148cf6acf116192e5093f0556913d7816907/begin-workout.png" /><img width="3840" height="3001" width_o="3840" height_o="3001" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9523f6cd24c05774b364faa143ee51383a54c3b5b1d6bd9fbc6b4e1d4b7562b4/Phone_with_ball_v1.png" data-mid="39818042" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9523f6cd24c05774b364faa143ee51383a54c3b5b1d6bd9fbc6b4e1d4b7562b4/Phone_with_ball_v1.png" />

As the patient gets healthier, the workouts reflect the change, the hills and valleys get steeper and narrower.

<img width="3840" height="3001" width_o="3840" height_o="3001" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f88d398770f9a78e9209d1e0ef54c0f9b6684747b5511735c58b70d4960fa2bb/workout_2.png" data-mid="39818193" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f88d398770f9a78e9209d1e0ef54c0f9b6684747b5511735c58b70d4960fa2bb/workout_2.png" />

Designing around the understanding doctors and patients need different things.&nbsp;

<img width="720" height="288" width_o="720" height_o="288" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3ce2e96301d73db339e22861a754f9fc941ac94b9a410ca9cbb4807db8f79fee/Untitled-3.gif" data-mid="39820576" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/720/i/3ce2e96301d73db339e22861a754f9fc941ac94b9a410ca9cbb4807db8f79fee/Untitled-3.gif" />

When it comes to physical therapy, the doctor needs analytic data. How the patient is progressing, how often they are exercising, is it at the rate they expect?

<img width="1753" height="495" width_o="1753" height_o="495" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/418c4145a68ba1cd94383c035efeeb0f26a9b6051dd49f698d87478a22a9ba89/Capture.PNG" data-mid="39819808" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/418c4145a68ba1cd94383c035efeeb0f26a9b6051dd49f698d87478a22a9ba89/Capture.PNG" />

While the patient needs the design to be as non-intrusive as possible. All they need is to do an exercise, let their doctor know and go on with their day.

<img width="2847" height="1255" width_o="2847" height_o="1255" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9eaa25768fd906acc9c12fb7ed2f0f71d56c6dc3ce1dd824904324b93403ee18/graphic.png" data-mid="39820722" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9eaa25768fd906acc9c12fb7ed2f0f71d56c6dc3ce1dd824904324b93403ee18/graphic.png" />

The data collected works into the larger system of healthcare. The local patient can now be connected to not only their doctor, but the hospital, insurance, and the government. &nbsp;

These connections can subsidize cost for patients, information for researchers, and most importantly provide better recovery.

The New Domestic Typology&nbsp;
NDT is an investigation into the way that furniture pronounces itself, influences us and informs our uses of it.&nbsp;

<img width="3024" height="3678" width_o="3024" height_o="3678" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a20326d239ddb58cb0f5a17391d003c8b9ec940b7e60037bce1dde8d16b86f4d/IMG_2808.JPG" data-mid="42782835" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/a20326d239ddb58cb0f5a17391d003c8b9ec940b7e60037bce1dde8d16b86f4d/IMG_2808.JPG" />

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;NDT started from the observation of a freelance worker in a coffee shop “working”, which prompted the question did this new emerging working class “work” at the coffee shop, or for their parent company? For so long office furniture had evolved to fit the human as a sort of machine, the Herman Miller’s of the world provided their work chairs to the world and optimized production followed. This draws back to the original point, if the new precarious working class works from a Starbucks, then why does the furniture in a starbucks not present the same careful considerations?&nbsp;

<img width="2340" height="3021" width_o="2340" height_o="3021" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0f7490b961e95be2590fb0fe4bae722d29127520ededba9a0b383bcec78348ba/Fordist_ai_v1.png" data-mid="42782989" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0f7490b961e95be2590fb0fe4bae722d29127520ededba9a0b383bcec78348ba/Fordist_ai_v1.png" /><img width="2340" height="2679" width_o="2340" height_o="2679" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/201367917c63ab53aa9c745ff79287e505234e73807708f59850a4ab45510b3c/Fordist_ai_v2.png" data-mid="42782990" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/201367917c63ab53aa9c745ff79287e505234e73807708f59850a4ab45510b3c/Fordist_ai_v2.png" />

I argue that in a fordist economy work and leisure we’re clearly seperated, and in turn the way that furniture pronounced itself was very clear. An Aeron Chair tells you its about work, an Eames chair tells you its about leisure.

&nbsp;<img width="350" height="350" width_o="350" height_o="350" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/08d31c04320f5ef87870ca1ed2c312b08fb30780dd1cc23e6028ba248766df5b/41OEuSNPIlL._SL500_AC_SS350_.jpg" data-mid="42783044" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/350/i/08d31c04320f5ef87870ca1ed2c312b08fb30780dd1cc23e6028ba248766df5b/41OEuSNPIlL._SL500_AC_SS350_.jpg" /><img width="480" height="360" width_o="480" height_o="360" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c6d1849ef0f1604c519a13a66a560327ce184fae4d12d5eee1123c9f80e71b8f/ig_prd_ovw_eames_lounge_chair_and_ottoman_14.jpg.rendition.480.480.jpg" data-mid="42783047" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/480/i/c6d1849ef0f1604c519a13a66a560327ce184fae4d12d5eee1123c9f80e71b8f/ig_prd_ovw_eames_lounge_chair_and_ottoman_14.jpg.rendition.480.480.jpg" />

In a post-fordist economy this once opaque line is becoming a gradient, pushing in both directions of where work begins, stops and ultimately overlaps with leisure.&nbsp;

<img width="1280" height="720" width_o="1280" height_o="720" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/480f7f36ae70afb890a5036538bd003b9b21683e2bdf6ac58e7df7a783320304/Herman-Miller-Living-Office-2.jpg" data-mid="42785534" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/480f7f36ae70afb890a5036538bd003b9b21683e2bdf6ac58e7df7a783320304/Herman-Miller-Living-Office-2.jpg" />

Modern offices more and more begin to look like homes, including plants, lounge chairs, soft walls, and some even to go as far as to include ping-pong tables.&nbsp;

If one can visually disrupt this pronounciation, then they can approach the chair with their own intentions, the utility of a chair becomes dependent on our needs and not the other way around.
Each chair here is covered in a combination fabric of black mesh and white spandex. This combination creates a morray effect which disruptes visual cues like depth and scale. The steel frame acts as a weight to pull the spandex over any number of different chairs.&nbsp;

<img width="3186" height="3426" width_o="3186" height_o="3426" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/564c97760f4d74a761328f2860284fd6c7661181f7b813d22e05d8b1eec596ec/edit3.jpg" data-mid="42784073" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/564c97760f4d74a761328f2860284fd6c7661181f7b813d22e05d8b1eec596ec/edit3.jpg" /><img width="5184" height="3456" width_o="5184" height_o="3456" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/aa1b043aa664dfb4820ab46dff652f9b0199a14d9618e453cb1036caee8c51ad/edit1.jpg" data-mid="42784413" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/aa1b043aa664dfb4820ab46dff652f9b0199a14d9618e453cb1036caee8c51ad/edit1.jpg" />
The New Domestic Typology is an ongoing investigation into our relationship to furniture as the space of domesticity, work, labor, and leisure become even more fluid.&nbsp;

On Value

Where does value come from?

On Value was commissioned by
and exhibited in 1of.design, 2018.

<img width="1462" height="2208" width_o="1462" height_o="2208" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/dde209e8d41d5ef28e5c4879b7014d3803bd183542ff82c4391ac1d14a341137/IMG_5747.JPG" data-mid="42786264" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/dde209e8d41d5ef28e5c4879b7014d3803bd183542ff82c4391ac1d14a341137/IMG_5747.JPG" />

On Value presents three separate pieces all priced equally:

20 cubic inches of land, air, sunlight, and everything that enters the space.

Decontamination water plant, able to purify 12oz of water in 8 hours.

9 bottles of purified water.

<img width="3300" height="2550" width_o="3300" height_o="2550" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4b1299e5647f9d71130fd4bf29f73a65357ee26a07026c8c107eaf9f1ae31b4c/Value.png" data-mid="42786432" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4b1299e5647f9d71130fd4bf29f73a65357ee26a07026c8c107eaf9f1ae31b4c/Value.png" />

On Value pulls in economic critique based on the difference in exchange value vs. use value. The use of land, the exchange of water, the use/exchange value of labor. At what stage is value assigned, and how is it being structured, and for whom?

<img width="2539" height="3427" width_o="2539" height_o="3427" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/cf99e9937932c6fb2f45b95e66f2992560c1bee3e39672e682c362d90a500a19/IMG_5748.jpg" data-mid="42788046" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/cf99e9937932c6fb2f45b95e66f2992560c1bee3e39672e682c362d90a500a19/IMG_5748.jpg" />

Ultimately value is assigned at every level, the water desalinization plant uses land but makes the next step (water) useable making it exchangeable. Nothing is “worth” more than anything else because value is assigned as a system.&nbsp;

Pectus Carinatum is a condition where the coastal cartilage of the rib cage overgrows and deforms. The sternum protrudes forward asymetrically. Pectus carinatum happens in about 1 out of every 400 boys and develops in adolecence.

	The treatment for pectus carinanum is a brace, much like those for the teeth the brace corrects the deformity by sqeezing the chest back into place.

	<img width="200" height="184" width_o="200" height_o="184" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6f5df71b26a733692818a1a109f6327b2bc9ea68237a6de399214e341d41c409/user4.jpg" data-mid="43273915" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/200/i/6f5df71b26a733692818a1a109f6327b2bc9ea68237a6de399214e341d41c409/user4.jpg" />

	<img width="240" height="288" width_o="240" height_o="288" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/45c7dfee32e4648adda94a857622fcdf427662277ed987bd0c49150c7daab5e3/user2.jpg" data-mid="43273914" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/240/i/45c7dfee32e4648adda94a857622fcdf427662277ed987bd0c49150c7daab5e3/user2.jpg" />

<img width="493" height="316" width_o="493" height_o="316" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0d08aa05ebd72107c487895f3b4f13657ba8d8538fcfab2317f09d4b14a7ad61/brac3.jpg" data-mid="43274261" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/493/i/0d08aa05ebd72107c487895f3b4f13657ba8d8538fcfab2317f09d4b14a7ad61/brac3.jpg" /><img width="3090" height="1686" width_o="3090" height_o="1686" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7bd4a420a02087e6f0aba939f08deca5d8f2fee06d2fdddb5b340568e880f28d/brace2.jpg" data-mid="43274262" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/7bd4a420a02087e6f0aba939f08deca5d8f2fee06d2fdddb5b340568e880f28d/brace2.jpg" />

	The problem with using this brace is less about it’s physical limitations, and more about its emotional negligence. Adherence to wear the brace through the entirety of the treatment (usually 17-24 months, 22 hours a day) is low. That’s because the device is not designed to live with the patient, only on top of them.&nbsp;

	Ae-01 is all about the future of medical wear, additive manufacturing is changing how we interact with these objects and the personalization not only of fititng, but of its looks. Using 3D knitting, ae-01 is able to conceal much of the tension straps of the brace. 3D knitting also affords ae-01 to use varying tensions of threads as to reduce and control the strain and pain of the device.&nbsp;

	<img width="1762" height="1018" width_o="1762" height_o="1018" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/95c57d188b627fad07baf887e07afd0b3086de9379a904ab8493afe875019d17/Ae-01_program.png" data-mid="44121611" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/95c57d188b627fad07baf887e07afd0b3086de9379a904ab8493afe875019d17/Ae-01_program.png" />

	Ae-01 uses a 3d printed plate to maximize the comfort of the fit to the protrusion, and can be replaced more easily than the current system of moulding. The 3d printed plate fits over the protrusion and also onto the back, held together by a ratcheting strap.&nbsp;

Cumulous Cloud Sofa &nbsp;In 2017, of the 12,000 tons of furniture generated, only 40 tons we’re recycled. [source]

The design team at Buffy sought to produce the most sustainable sofa possible. We quickly realized most furniture is produced with virgin materials and these materials were shipped all over the world before being assembled.&nbsp;
Therefore the two problems are:
1. Locality of production.
2. Reusing of recycled materials.&nbsp;

<img width="1752" height="1123" width_o="1752" height_o="1123" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/309ea5a18f96a36d309684db408b5e6b8e7d99a56acbcf6857c071b04cd8ddc5/furniturescore.png" data-mid="74247365" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/309ea5a18f96a36d309684db408b5e6b8e7d99a56acbcf6857c071b04cd8ddc5/furniturescore.png" />

	All furniture’s ecological impact is scored and awarded via FEMB as well as LEED certifications and qualifications.&nbsp;
	Buffy sought to create a sofa that beat it’s competitors based on these global standards
<img width="2853" height="1270" width_o="2853" height_o="1270" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/806fca85b8ee1b3d794f6872e6af7a6984c6531a170f71d0feb69395fe31aaf0/herval_1.JPG" data-mid="107666846" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/806fca85b8ee1b3d794f6872e6af7a6984c6531a170f71d0feb69395fe31aaf0/herval_1.JPG" />
The Buffy team traveled to brazil to partner and prototype with Herval, a production facility that has been making furniture for over 40 years. &nbsp;

<img width="2906" height="1173" width_o="2906" height_o="1173" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0600b5877efe9530764aca0ace7fe7e990d83fe0e00edd25ef0b090b5219984e/interior_of_sofa.JPG" data-mid="107667032" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0600b5877efe9530764aca0ace7fe7e990d83fe0e00edd25ef0b090b5219984e/interior_of_sofa.JPG" />

The typical sofa is largely the same across the board, we looked at our competitors like Ikea and Target and found what materials we could deliver alternatives on.&nbsp;
<img width="1800" height="1650" width_o="1800" height_o="1650" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/fdc958974f4fcd775cd5feb4d841d78db045789f5b85a6117a35c53b6ab49bc9/CN_diagram.png" data-mid="62977591" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/fdc958974f4fcd775cd5feb4d841d78db045789f5b85a6117a35c53b6ab49bc9/CN_diagram.png" />

<img width="2992" height="1830" width_o="2992" height_o="1830" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/ec72bddbe2bd5d4be62f563838f3a1de0b5dd0a4e69c4c969496872c94dc7efd/colorways.JPG" data-mid="107667458" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/ec72bddbe2bd5d4be62f563838f3a1de0b5dd0a4e69c4c969496872c94dc7efd/colorways.JPG" />

We designed a sofa that was plush and cloud-like - looking at many influences of the 70’s, while making it subtle enough that as home styles evolve it can stay with us. The sofa is being produced and will reach markets 2021.
